GEDCOM 7 was published in 2021. Adoption has been steady but uneven, and the answer to "does my program support it" changes with each release. This page is a snapshot, checked as of mid-2026. If a row is out of date, the support form is the place to say so.

How to read the table

  • Read: opens a GEDCOM 7 file.
  • Write: exports one.
  • GEDZIP: reads or writes the zip package with media.

FamilySearch
Read yes (an upload is compared against the shared tree). Write yes, in a limited way: a download of up to eight generations of your ancestors, in GEDCOM 7, without photos or memories, on a page FamilySearch itself now marks as unsupported. GEDZIP no.
Ancestry
Read yes for import. Write no; exports are 5.5.1 (GEDCOM 7 export has been announced but had not shipped at last check). GEDZIP no.
MyHeritage
Read yes for import. Write no; exports are 5.5.1. GEDZIP no.
WikiTree
Read no (imports want 5.5.x in UTF-8). Write no; exports are 5.5.1. GEDZIP no.
Geni
Read no, write no (exports are 5.5.1), GEDZIP no.

GED-VIEW

Read: yes, including shared notes, multi-file media records and the archive's own media. Write: not applicable; GED-VIEW does not export GEDCOM. GEDZIP: yes, open a .gdz or .zip directly and its pictures appear without a folder step.

If your program is not listed

Look in its export dialog for a version choice. If GEDCOM 7 is offered, it writes it. Try importing a GEDCOM 7 file; if it opens without complaint, it reads it. Then say so through the support form and the table will be updated.

Does it matter?

For most people, not yet. GEDCOM 5.5.1 opens everywhere and will for years. The two reasons to care are GEDZIP, for media travelling with the file, and UTF-8, for an old file with encoding trouble. Both are covered in the version comparison guide.
