Legacy has a thorough export with a customize screen that lets you decide exactly what goes in the file.
The steps
- Open the family file in Legacy.
- File > Export To > GEDCOM File.
- Choose which program the file is for. Generic GEDCOM is right for GED-VIEW and most viewers.
- Click Customize to choose what to include.
- Set privacy options if sharing.
- Click Start Export and choose where to save.
Labels are as of mid-2026.
The customize screen
Legacy lets you tick or untick almost every kind of data: notes, sources, events, addresses, pictures (as references), to-do items, and more. For a full copy, include everything.
Privacy
Legacy can suppress details for living people and exclude records marked private or invisible. Both are only relevant if the file is leaving your computer.
Media
Legacy writes paths to picture files but does not copy them. Legacy's own media folder is usually under Documents, in a folder named for the family file. In GED-VIEW, connect that folder with Connect media folder in the file menu.
Next
Export a generic GEDCOM with notes and sources, open it in GED-VIEW, and check the Sources page. Legacy exports carry good source detail.
